Description of Aapticheilichthys, nov. gen., a new monotypic fish genus of Lampeyes (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from western Africa.
Jean Huber
Abstract: A new monotypic genus of Lampeye killifish, Aapticheilichthys, is described for the species Procatopus websteri Huber, 2007. In comparison to the related deep-bodied genera of the Procatopus group (Procatopus, Plataplochilus, Rhexipanchax) and to the monotypic estuarine genus Aplocheilichthys, also deep-bodied, it is readily distinguished by the unique character of an advanced insertion of the dorsal fin relatively to the insertion of the anal fin in both sexes. No other Lampeye genus exhibit such superimposed unpaired fins. In addition, several other autapomorphies are given and a comparative discussion versus related or geographically neighbouring genera is proposed.
