Reanalysis of single type of Rivulus ocellatus Hensel, 1880 in Berlin Museum pending its putative molecular analysis, with the proposal of revalidation of Rivulus caudomarginatus.

Huber, J.H.

Abstract: The single type of Rivulus ocellatus Hensel, 1880, today in genus Kryptolebias, has been studied during a brief stay in Berlin Museum premises in early January 2013. Its detailed morphological analysis reveals that no single diagnostic character versus its closest congener, also sympatric in part in type area, can be found on that single specimen with certainty, but that a single character, LL counts, counted on the lower range of variations of the 2 species, is congruent with the main conclusions by Seegers (1984) and is not congruent with more recent conclusions by Costa (2011). Hence, the conservatively-minded proposed revalidation of Rivulus caudomarginatus Seegers, 1984 and the synonymization of Kryptolebias hermaphroditus Costa, 2011, into ocellatus, pending the strongly promoted future molecular analysis of that type, when the technique is solid and applicable to most preserved old types in a foreseeable future {note (2020) : an unexpected copy-paste error in text and abstract states Hensel, 1880, as describer of Rivulus ocellatus and it is an obvious error for 1868 (however, it is correctly stated in text everywhere)}.
