Expanded habitat ranges of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) pivijay and Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) xi, with remarks on threatened type locality of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) elegans.

Vermeulen, F.B.M.

Abstract: Following 3 new sampling collections since the descriptions of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) pivijay and Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) xi published late 2013, the distributions of the 2 species, previously only known from their type localities, are greatly expanded. Respectively, the distribution of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) pivijay is extended by 445 km from type locality and the distribution of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) xi is extended by 250 km from type locality, both in northern central Colombia. The least distance between two collecting locations of these two related species is now 82 km while another distinctive Rivulus species was disclosed at the East side of the Eastern Andes, and additional ecological and altitudinal differences are suggested. The type locality of Rivulus (Cynodonichthys) elegans at Quebrada La Cristalina near Caceres, Antioquia Dpt, has also been visited but the site was completely destroyed. However, the taxon is not presently endangered because the species lives in several creeks in the nearby mountains as well.
