CATALOG OF FISHES

  • Produced by William N. Eschmeyer, Ronald Fricke and Richard van der Laan.
  • Gives bibliographic information on all ca. 60 000 known taxa of recent fishes (i.e., not fossils) and the authors' personal evaluation of their systematic status. Gives also the type of water for each species (fresh, brackish, marine).
  • Type series of each taxon in this website started from there, updated, completed and improved.
Reciprocally, Killi-Data listings have been made available to the Catalogue.
  • High quality standards, but now with weaknesses due to its large scope and complexity (last update is mentioned). Language: English. Target: ichthyologists.

FISHBASE, the data base on all fishes

  • Produced by an international team of ichthyologists, initially led by Rainer Froese and Daniel Pauly,
based in Manila, Philippines (now it has split in a high number of clone projects in each major countries, with basic coordination between each of them… and also differences).
  • Commissioned by the European Union (initially).
  • Aims to forward all available information on all taxa of fishes.
  • Eschmeyer's catalogue is also included, with some delay though, as well as many Museums' data bases of collections (but now discrepencies are noticeable between both projects).
  • Quality standards depend on each family of fishes: for oviparous Cyprinodonts, electronic files of Killi-Data 1996 were forwarded (today, unfortunately errors are not rare). Language: English. Target: ichthyologists and biologists.

I.C.Z.N., CODE OF I.C.Z.N.
